CBD and Shopping

The CBD is bustling with bargains and deals. Merchandise varying from traditional African curios to cutting edge fashion to a host of tasty take-aways line the warm, friendly city centre. Find a unique gem in the treasure chest of Durban’s central business district.

City Hall

In 1903 the Town Council invited architects to submit designs for a new town hall. The winning design was submitted by Stanley G. Hudson who was inspired by the City Hall of Belfast, Northern Ireland and replicated it. On completion in 1910 it was considered a 'very bold and progressive design'.

On the second floor, is the Durban Art Gallery, which hosts over 400 works, including British, French and Dutch paintings, objets d'art such as French and Chinese ceramics, early glass vases by Lalique and bronzes by Rodin. From the 1970s on, many local works from artists and crafts-people were added to the collection, and the Gallery's collecting focus is now largely concentrated on works which reflect the rich multi-cultural diversity of Durban and South Africa. The holdings now include over 3500 works. The Durban Art Gallery regularly hosts travelling exhibitions of works which do not belong to the Gallery, such as the images of human rights exhibition.

Tours can be arranged via telephone.

ICC

The ICC has been voted Durban’s Leading Conference Centre for six consecutive years by World Travel Awards. A focal point of Durban's business district, the International Convention Centre Durban is a functional space in an aesthetic environment. Centrally located and just a quarter of an hour from the airport, ICC Durban is minutes from hotels and beaches. Palm trees form a welcoming avenue while at the entrance to the centre three baobabs, Africa's tree giants, bid a regal greeting.

The International Convention Centre Durban (ICC) is one of the most advanced conference facilities in the world. Flexibility and versatility are key factors in the design of this state-of-the-art technology-driven centre. The large venue has seating for 5000 delegates or 7000m squared of column free floor space. Little wonder then that ICC Durban is where Africa and the world meet.

A new, R460 million, state-of-the-art, indoor arena has been built on to the ICC and will assist in attracting top international sporting and entertainment events to the country. Already the ICC extension has attracted Grammy award winners, George Benson and Al Jarreau, who performed at the gala opening on March 20, 2007.

The ICC Durban Arena, positioned on the south side of the existing ICC which integrates the adjacent Durban Exhibition Centre and Hilton Hotel, has not compromised the Centre's unique ability to turn the entire area into a completely secure 'island site,' which is vital for United Nations events.'
